It is extremely hard work being in this industry, contrary to popular belief! However there are some very funny moments that I would like to share with you, for your amusement in the run up to Christmas.
It’s very personal going into someone’s home and seeing how they live, so we need to remain professional at all times. There are occasions however, when I just want to stand up and say “Oh my goodness” or “what on Earth am I looking at?” or even, “Did you see that?”
One of those occasions went like this… I had an appointment to list a property for sale. I met with the homeowners, they showed me around their house and everything was going great. They invited me to sit down on their front balcony, of which faced directly to the villa opposite. When I sat down, my eyes automatically went straight across the road. I could see someone standing, facing me in the garden. Then my eyes sent the message to my brain. “Oh my goodness – that woman is naked!” I tried to avert my eyes as quickly as possible, but I’m sure she saw me! I kept talking as if nothing was wrong. Obviously this was a common occurrence as the homeowner never batted an eye! Talk about keeping calm and carrying on!
Another occasion, I was with a DIY enthusiast. He had shown me around the inside of his home, then we proceeded to the outside. He very proudly showed me how to access the roof solarium… by way of his homemade lift! I wanted to shout out “What on Earth am I looking at?” as this contraption looked deadly. There was no way I was going to risk my life in that! I think I would have preferred someone pulling me up by rope than this heap of metal that looked like it had been stuck together with superglue! Hence, I took the stairs!
I’ve definitely seen some sights over the years, and I have no issues whatsoever with how people choose to live in their own homes. But I can’t help but chuckle to myself, when I do see something out of the ordinary. I am only human! These are the “Did you see that?” moments!
I’ve seen an S & M dungeon, a room that looked like it was full of mould, but really it was old fashioned wallpaper, graffiti (scribble, not art) on the interior walls of a lounge, rabbits running through the house leaving droppings behind… This list goes on and on ha! Ha!
It is such a diverse world we live in, and the way in which people choose to live, but really, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!
